Prof. Gautam Kumar Jha is widely known as an academic specializing in cultural studies and literature from South Asia, with a strong focus on Southeast Asian culture, including Indonesia. In this lecture, he will discuss how characters from Wayang, a UNESCO-recognized intangible cultural heritage of Indonesia, have been adapted into modern literary works. Wayang, as a traditional performing art form rich in moral values and philosophy, features complex and fascinating characters such as Arjuna, Bima, Srikandi, and Semar.
The lecture will explore how these characters have been translated into literary texts, how they are positioned within modern narratives, and how the oral and visual traditions of Wayang performances have been converted into literary forms. The discussion will also address how cross-cultural influences and globalization have shaped the adaptation process.
The event will be moderated by Nur Khasanatun Ni’mah, a student of the Master’s Program in Literary Studies at FIB Undip, who will facilitate the discussion and Q&A session between the participants and the speaker. With high enthusiasm from the participants, the session is expected to be a productive and engaging exchange of knowledge.
This Visiting Professor event is part of the Master’s Program in Literary Studies at FIB Undip‘s efforts to strengthen the internationalization of the program and bring a global perspective to the study of literature and Indonesian culture. In addition to enriching the academic experience of students, this event is also expected to broaden public understanding of the importance of preserving culture through literature and scholarly approaches.
We invite all students, faculty, researchers, and the general public to join this lecture. By participating in this event, attendees will not only gain new insights into literary adaptation but also strengthen their appreciation for Indonesia’s cultural heritage, which has become an integral part of global literary discourse.
