Master of Literature of the Faculty of Humanities, Universitas Diponegoro , held Public Lecture with the theme “Reading Literary Works or Literary Sciences, Which One is More Important for Literature Students?” in the Faculty of Humanities of UNDIP Meeting Room on Wednesday, 23/10/2019. The guest speaker of the event was Dr. Yosep BB Margono S, attended by the dean, the head of the study program, the lecturers, and the students of Faculty of Humanities of UNDIP.
The program began with the greeting by the Head of MIS Dr. Suryadi, M.Hum. The Head of Study Program, who was just inaugurated a month ago, said that the purpose of the activity is students being able to understand the phenomena of current literary works and making those phenomena as the object of thesis research. The Dean of FIB Dr. Nurhayati, M.Hum opened the event and delivered her speech emphasizing the eagerness to read that literary students must have. Students are expected to prepare their needs according to time demands, “In the era of the industrial revolution 4.0, there is nothing we could not be able to find. If you don’t know, don’t stop, keep learning” she said.
Dr. Yosep in his presentation highlighted the literacy of Indonesian people which is still considered to be low according to some research results. The University of Iowa (USA) alumni asked the majority of participants about the duration and the material of reading, “I usually read when there are assignments or it is a must,” replied one of the participants. Some other participants answered they read literature works between 2-3 hours per day. Dialogue in the public lecture moderated by Dr. Sukarjo Waluyo was then directed and specified on the theme, which one is more important between reading theories or reading literary works? Dr. Yosep stated that both readings are equally important, nothing is better in both readings, “A good reader needs both intellectual and emotional development / balance,” said the University of Ohio (USA) alumni. The alumni of FIB UNDIP in 1988, shared his thoughts not only as manifestation of concern for his alma mater, but also as contribution for the improvement of Faculty of Humanities of UNDIP, especially Master of Literature Study Program.
