Today’s modern life, in which time becomes very valuable and the effectiveness of communication becomes the main thing, the existence of newspapers and social media is something that cannot be denied. Newspapers and social media are now becoming significant communication tools. Unfortunately, we often encounter several errors in writing. Good writing skills require: First, using a standard form, meaning that the word order must be appropriate in accordance with predetermined rules. Second, using the right Indonesian language, meaning that language in newspapers and social media must pay attention to the rules of spelling use, rules of choice of words or diction, and rules of sentence composition. Third, expressing the content concisely and clearly so that the reader can understand exactly the content.
As time goes on, the teaching-learning process in schools has developed as well. The high penetration of gadgets has changed the educational paradigm to be technology-based. In this era, digital natives who are already very familiar with information technology and are adept at using gadgets have been born. This has resulted in how the digital generation perceives information. It is completely different from their predecessor generation in terms of learning process. The digital generation is accustomed to finding information on Google and Wikipedia to help them in completing their homework.
Tools can disseminate information in considerable quantities, and even share it with the entire world quickly. These tools are the ‘ultimate weapon’ for the digital generation to educate themselves. They are social media. The question is with the information ‘explosion’ in such a way, how does this affect their learning process? The use of social media without control will lead to learners preferring the virtual world.
However, one thing we should bear in mind is the premise of ‘technology can never be value-neutral’. Education plays an important role for the students’ preparation. Writing literary and cultural articles in newspapers and social media is necessary because it is commonly used in the teaching-learning process itself. The students actually have the opportunity to write literary and cultural articles. Traveling, going to markets, experiencing pandemic situations, and so on are topics that can be the ideas for writing literary and cultural articles.
