MASTER’S PROGRAM IN LITERATURE, FIB UNDIP ORGANIZES VISITING PROFESSOR PROGRAM FEATURING PROF. GENILDA AZERÊDO FROM BRAZIL

Semarang, June 4, 2026 – The Master’s Program in Literature, Faculty of Humanities, Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP), successfully organized a Visiting Professor program as part of its commitment to academic internationalization and global scholarly engagement. Conducted online via Microsoft Teams, the event featured Prof. Genilda Azerêdo from the Departamento de Letras Estrangeiras Modernas, Universidade Federal da Paraíba, Brazil, who delivered a lecture entitled “The Flirtations Among the Arts: Virginia Woolf’s Essays on Literature and Visual Culture.”

The session was moderated by Dennis Audria P. and attended by faculty members, graduate students, and participants from various academic institutions. The event provided an international platform for intellectual exchange on literary studies, visual culture, and interdisciplinary approaches to the arts.

In her presentation, Prof. Genilda Azerêdo explored Virginia Woolf’s reflections on the relationship between literature and visual arts as expressed in her essays. She highlighted Woolf’s view that aesthetic experience extends beyond the boundaries of a single artistic medium and is instead shaped through dynamic interactions among different forms of art. According to Woolf, literature and visual culture engage in a productive dialogue that enriches artistic expression and broadens interpretive possibilities.

Prof. Azerêdo further discussed how Woolf’s essays offer valuable insights into interdisciplinary approaches to literary and cultural studies. The lecture examined key concepts such as visual perception, artistic representation, modernist aesthetics, and the interplay between words and images in the production of meaning. Through these discussions, participants were encouraged to consider how different artistic forms influence one another and contribute to a deeper understanding of culture and creativity.

The event concluded with an engaging discussion session in which participants raised questions regarding Woolf’s modernist thought, visual culture, and contemporary interdisciplinary research in the humanities. The active participation of students and faculty reflected the strong interest in exploring connections between literature, art, and cultural studies from a global perspective.

This Visiting Professor program provided significant academic benefits by broadening participants’ understanding of modernist literature, visual culture, and interdisciplinary methodologies. It also strengthened international academic collaboration between Universitas Diponegoro and Universidade Federal da Paraíba, fostering opportunities for future scholarly exchanges and cooperative research initiatives.

Through activities such as this, the Master’s Program in Literature continues to support Universitas Diponegoro’s internationalization agenda by creating opportunities for students and academics to engage with distinguished scholars from around the world.
